The Courage of Authenticity
“Authenticity is a collection of choices to that we have to make every day. It’s about the choice to show up and be real. The choice to be honest. The choice to let your true self be seen.”
From Brené Brown – The Gifts of Imperfection
Authenticity is a daily practice of letting go of
who we think we’re supposed to be
and embracing who we are.
This sounded so big and so scary to me in the beginning, but by showing the courage to be imperfect, to set and hold boundaries and to allow myself to be vulnerable every day,
- I’m building up my courage muscle,
- I feel more and more myself and
my comfort zone grows a little bit with every decision when I’m being true to my heart.
I also allowed myself the compassion to start with people and groups where I felt it was okay to practice my authenticity. At the start, I felt the butterflies of opening up and showing more and deeper layers of myself. In some situations and with some people it worked and flowed easily and with others I felt uncomfortable and unsafe.
So it’s good to remember, we all struggle to be authentic and brave. It’s the courage we show in the many little decisions we make every day to be true to ourselves and true to our heart, which makes us strong enough and resilient so we can start living our whole-hearted life.
Closing with an amazing quote from Brené Brown
“Mindfully practiced authenticity during our most soul-searching struggles is how we invite grace, joy and gratitude into our lives.”
